Student Privacy & Parent Consent Policy
This policy describes how Nucleus Academy protects student privacy, including verifiable parent consent for students under 13 in accordance with COPPA.
Age Groups and Consent
Students under 13 require verifiable parental consent before account activation, in accordance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Students aged 13 to 17 require parent or guardian notification or consent as configured by Academy settings and applicable law. Students 18 and older provide direct acceptance unless enrolled through a school, organization, or sponsor with additional requirements.
COPPA Direct Notice to Parents
For students under 13, Nucleus Academy provides this direct notice to parents: Nucleus Academy collects the student's name, email, learning progress, quiz results, reflections, project submissions, badges, certificates, and safety records. This information is used to deliver courses, track progress, support mentors and instructors, and maintain safety. Assigned mentors, instructors, and administrators can view the student's progress. In-app messaging and AI learning assistance are available subject to parental consent and admin settings. Parents may withdraw consent at any time, which takes effect prospectively. Parents have the right to review their child's personal information, request deletion, and refuse further collection or use. Nucleus Academy does not condition a child's participation on collecting more information than is reasonably necessary to operate the educational program. Device identifiers and IP addresses are treated as personal information for children under 13.
Student Records
Student records include courses started and completed, lesson progress, quiz scores, reflections, project and capstone submissions, badges, certificates, readiness status, review notes, safety flags, and remediation assignments.
Parent Observers
Parent observers may view approved student progress only. Parent observers cannot impersonate students, complete work on behalf of students, unlock courses, alter scores, or override administrator decisions.
Consent Withdrawal
Consent withdrawal takes effect prospectively. Withdrawal of consent for a student under 13 automatically deactivates the student account pending admin review. Already-retained records are handled according to the retention policy and legal requirements.
School and Organization Enrollments
When students enroll through a school or organization, additional agreement terms may apply. Nucleus Academy supports FERPA-like data controls for education records managed through school or organization agreements.
